Harry Potter: Dumbledore actor Sir Michael Gambon has died aged 82, cause of death revealed

Sad news for Harry Potter fans. Actor Michael Gambon, best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in six installments of the saga, has passed away. The news was shared by his family in a press release on Thursday, September 28. They wrote:

Loving husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following pneumonia.

50 years of acting career

Michael Gambon took over the role of Headmaster of Hogwarts in 2004. He replaced Richard Harris, who had died in 2002. It wasn't until the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, that fans were able to discover him as Albus Dumbledore. He also played his part in the rest of the franchise: Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and both parts of Deathly Hallows.

It was a role that made him a success, but not the only one. Gambon was also known for starring opposite Collin Firth in The King's Speech in 2010. He was in the cast of several major American productions, from Sleepy Hollow (1999), alongside Johnny Depp, to The Good Shepherd (2006), with Matt Damon. During his 50-year career, he won a total of five Baftas.

Sadly, he is not the first actor in the saga to die. In 2016, Alan Rickman, a.k.a. Severus Snape, passed away at the age of 69 from pancreatic cancer. More recently, on 14 October 2022, Robbie Coltrane, who played the endearing Rubeus Hagrid, died aged 72.
