From Matthew Perry to Tina Turner, here are all the celebrities we lost in 2023

Death, above all else, is the great equalizer. In 2023 we sadly suffered immeasurable losses as musicians, scientists, and activists all departed our world. Here is a look back at all the celebrities who have been lost this year.

Tina Turner, hailed as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, transcended borders with her dynamic presence as an American-born Swiss singer, songwriter, and actress. Rising to prominence both as one half of the celebrated duo Ike & Tina Turner and as a solo artist, Turner left an indelible mark on the music industry. Her repertoire boasted numerous chart-topping hits, including What’s Love Got to Do with It, The Best, Proud Mary, and River Deep, Mountain High. Turner's unparalleled talent earned her eight Grammy Awards and the rare distinction of being inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice. Additionally, she showcased her acting prowess in acclaimed films such as Tommy and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Her passing on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83, in Küsnacht, Switzerland, followed a period of declining health.

Nicholas Lloyd Webber is a Grammy-nominated composer who passed away on March 25 after a struggle with gastric cancer. Famously known as Nick, he died at the young age of 43. He received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

Following a brain haemorrhage suffered while on tour, Wayne Swinny, the guitarist and co-founder of the nu-metal ensemble Siliva, passed away on March 22 at the age of 59. 

At the age of 76, Peter Werner, a Hollywood director, passed away on March 21 due to a torn aorta. His accolades include an Oscar, which he earned for his 1977 short film titled In the 'Region of Ice.

Lance Reddick was a seasoned actor recognized for his appearances in films such as John Wick series and various television productions including The Wire, Fringe, Resident Evil, and Bosch. He peacefully passed away at the age of 60 on March 17 due to natural causes.

The talented vocalist who sang the hits What You Won't Do For Love and Open Your Eyes passed away on March 14 at the age of 71. He died due to long-term complications of a toxic reaction to the antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones.

Also known as Costa Titch, the South African rapper Constantinos Tsobanoglou died on March 11 at the age of 28 after collapsing during a performance at the Ultra Music Festival

Chaim Topol, renowned for his iconic portrayal of Tevye in the film adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof, passed away at the age of 87 on March 9 after battling Alzheimer's. Throughout his illustrious career, the Israeli actor was honoured with two Golden Globe awards.

Renowned for his groundbreaking visual effects work in numerous iconic giant-monster films, Bert I. Gordon, the esteemed sci-fi director, writer, and producer, departed the entertainment world at the age of 100 on March 8 2023.

Ian Falconer, was a renowned American author and illustrator celebrated for his creation of the beloved children's picture book series Olivia. He passed away on March 7 at the age of 63 due to kidney failure.

The guitarist of the rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd passed away on March 5 at the age of 71. He had heart issues which required surgery prior but his official cause of death was never revealed. He is the sole surviving member of the band.

Judith Heumann is an American disability rights activist who appeared in the Oscar-nominated documentary Crip Camp. She suffered from polio and passed away on March 4 at the age of 75.

The actor has completed over 200 pictures during his lifetime, collaborating with Hollywood's most acclaimed actors and directors. Tom Sizemore died of a brain aneurysm on March 3 at age 61.

Shorter was a 12-time Grammy Award-winning jazz saxophonist and composer who was known for shaping jazz music in the 20th century. He collaborated with icons including Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell. Shorter passed away at the age of 89 on March 2.

After battling an undisclosed illness that led to a three-month-long stay in the hospital, Mackey died on March 2 at the age of 56. He was a record producer and bass guitarist for the English rock band, Pulp. 

He was a British filmmaker who started his making documentaries and television commercials before transitioning into film. One of his most notable pictures, Chariots of Fire, won an Academy Award. He died after a short illness on February 10 at the age of 86.

Paco Rabanne, the legendary Spanish fashion innovator celebrated for his avant-garde designs and fragrances, departed on February 3 at the age of 88. The globally renowned designer passed away at his residence in Portsall, France.

Annie Wersching was an American actress renowned for starring in films and tv shows. However, it was her voice that brought one of the most iconic characters to life in the video game The Last of Us. She died of cancer on January 29 at the age of 45.

Lisa Marie Presley may be the daughter of the iconic couple Elvis and Priscilla Presley, but she was also married Micheal Jackson for two years. She was only 54 when she passed away  on January 12. She died of a suspected cardiac arrest. 

Jacobs was a country music songwriter, guitarist and pianist. He was considered a prominent figure of the genre. Kyle was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in an upstairs bedroom/office on 17 February. He was 49.

Paul O’Grady, an English entertainer recognized for his multifaceted talents as a comedian, broadcaster, drag performer, actor, and author, rose to prominence within London's gay community during the 1980s with his alter ego Lily Savage. Transitioning to mainstream success in the 1990s, he shed the Lily Savage persona and emerged as a prominent television and radio host, presenting shows including Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs. Additionally, O’Grady was also an author. Honoured for his contributions to entertainment, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2008. His unexpected yet serene passing occurred on March 28, 2023, at the age of 67, in Aldington, Kent.

Renowned for his multifaceted talents, Alan Arkin, an American actor, director, producer, author, singer, and composer, enjoyed a remarkable and diverse career. His accolades include an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. He graced the silver screen in notable films such as The Russians Are Coming, Wait Until Dark, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, Catch-22, Little Miss Sunshine, and Argo. Additionally, he showcased his directorial talents in films like Little Murders and The Sunshine Boys. His passing occurred on June 29, 2023, at the age of 89, in Carlsbad, California.

He was primarily known for his iconic stage and television personas, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. Burt Bacharach was as a pivotal figure in 20th-century popular music. His profound influence reverberated through countless hits, crafted in partnership with lyricist Hal David. Recognized for his unparalleled talent, Bacharach amassed an impressive array of accolades including six Grammy Awards, three Academy Awards, and one Emmy Award. His legacy endures despite his passing on February 8, 2023, at the age of 94, in Los Angeles, California.

Andy Rourke, an English musician celebrated as the bassist of the 1980s indie rock ensemble The Smiths, showcased a distinctive blend of melody and funk in his bass playing, shaping the band's iconic sound. Tony Bennett, an illustrious American vocalist renowned for his mastery of jazz and pop, enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning an impressive seven decades. Celebrated for his velvety voice and exceptional interpretive skills across various musical genres, Bennett's artistry captivated audiences worldwide. His remarkable talent garnered him an impressive array of accolades, including 20 Grammy Awards, including a coveted Lifetime Achievement Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards. His tenure with the Cleveland Browns of the NFL showcased his unmatched talent, leading the league in rushing yards and touchdowns for the majority of his illustrious career. Sinéad O’Connor, an Irish luminary celebrated for her distinct vocals and unwavering activism, left an indelible mark on the music industry and social discourse. Her meteoric rise to fame was propelled by her poignant rendition of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U in 1990, a global sensation that garnered her numerous accolades.

She died of natural causes. 

Jane Birkin, a celebrated British and French figure, carved her legacy as an actress, singer, and style icon, captivating audiences worldwide. Her enduring musical and romantic partnership with Serge Gainsbourg spanned a decade, yielding notable collaborations, including the provocative and controversial hit Je t’aime… moi non plus. Birkin's cinematic contributions were equally impactful, with standout performances in films like Blow-Up, Death on the Nile, and La Femme et le TGV. Her influence extended beyond the entertainment realm, inspiring the iconic Hermès Birkin handbag, synonymous with luxury and sophistication. She passed away on July 16, 2023, in Paris, France, at the age of 76.

Angus Cloud was an American actor catapulted into the spotlight for his portrayal of Fezco in the HBO series Euphoria. Despite lacking any prior acting background, Cloud's raw talent caught the attention of a casting director while he worked at a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. Swiftly becoming a beloved figure among fans, his performances were lauded for their authenticity and sincerity. In addition to his television success, Cloud made appearances in notable films like North Hollywood and The Line. Tragically, he passed away on July 31, 2023, in Oakland, California, at the young age of 25. His untimely death followed a period of mental health struggles compounded by the recent loss of his father, who had passed away just a week prior.

Geneviève de Fontenay, a prominent French entrepreneur, held the esteemed position of president within the Miss France Committee from 1981 to 2009, followed by the presidency of the Miss Prestige National Committee from 2010 to 2016. Renowned for her steadfast adherence to traditional beauty pageant standards, she became synonymous with her signature black and white ensembles adorned with distinctive hats. Beyond her involvement in the realm of beauty pageants, Fontenay actively championed various social and political causes, including animal rights, secularism, and anti-racism. She died on August 1, 2023, in Saint-Cloud, France, at the age of 90.

The esteemed supermodel Tatjana Patitz tragically succumbed to breast cancer on January 11, 2023, at the tender age of 56, leaving behind a legacy of vibrancy and allure. Her passing leaves a poignant void, with her 19-year-old son, Jonah.

Patitz's illustrious career catapulted her into the echelons of 'The Big Five' during the '80s and '90s, alongside esteemed counterparts including Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, and Linda Evangelista. 

At 82 years old, Sir Michael Gambon, the esteemed British actor with roots in Ireland bid farewell to the world. He was most known for his memorable portrayal of Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series.

David Watkins, an esteemed figure in Welsh rugby history. Serving as captain for both the British and Irish Lions in 1966 and Great Britain in 1977, Watkins epitomized leadership and skill throughout his illustrious career. 

His tenure with Salford was marked by remarkable success, culminating in his record-setting achievement as the club’s top points scorer. Recognized for his significant contributions to sport, he was honored with an MBE, and subsequently transitioned into rugby administration in Wales. His passing on 3 September 2023, at the age of 81, followed a battle with dementia.

Mathew Perry was famous for being in a 90s TV show called Friends. He portrayed the character Chandler Bing that was loved by many around the world. The actor was discovered deceased on October 28, he was only 54.
