Cameron Diaz reveals the reason why she quit Hollywood

Cameron Diazstars in the upcoming blockbuster Back in Action. And the Charlie’s Angels star is certainly 'back in action' after originally announcing her retirement from acting in 2018.

Cameron Diaz retired

Back in 2018, in an Entertainment Weekly interview with her The Sweetest Thing co-stars Selma Blair and Christina Applegate, Diaz first announced her retirement. She said:

I’m literally doing nothing... I’m totally down. I’m semi-retired, too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.

She then explained her decision to InStyle magazine in 2019:

The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world. If I decide to. I don’t miss performing.

In a 2020 episode of In Goop Health: The Sessions video series, she told her friend and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow that she felt 'a peace. I got a peace in my soul because I finally was taking care of myself.'

A victim of societal objectification and exploitation

In a recent conversation with RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni, Michelle Visage, on an episode of Visage's podcast Rule Breakers, Diaz described how she struggled with the misogyny of the industry. She said:

I am absolutely a victim to all of the societal objectifications and exploitations that women are subjected to. I have bought into all of them myself at certain times. It’s hard not to, it’s hard not to look at yourself and judge yourself against other markers of beauty, and I think that that’s one of the biggest things.

'Back in Action'

On 29 June 2022, actor and co-star Jamie Foxx shared a recording of a phone call with Diaz to announce her return to acting. He wrote:

Cameron I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now. Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT. @CameronDiaz and I are BACK IN ACTION - our new movie with @NetflixFilm. Production starting later this year!

Foxx brought in NFL footballer Tom Brady to help her 'un-tire.' Brady joked:

I was talking to Jamie and he said you needed a few tips on how to un-retire. I'm relatively successful at un-retiring.

Diaz responded on Instagram:

Jamie Foxx, only you could get me back in action!!! I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast!
